Learn How to Play Gin Rummy
The game of gin rummy is highly entertaining and a lot of people enjoy playing it. For those that do not the good news is that it is really easy to learn. Here is how to play gin rummy.
You start the game by dealing 10 cards to all players. The cards that remain need to be stacked up between the players. The hand needs to be organized in partial or complete melds. In the game of gin rummy a meld is a set that is made out of 4 or 3 cards that have the same numeric value. There is also the possibility of building a run, which basically means a sequence of cards that have the same suit.
Gin Rummy is played in turns. Every turn starts with a player picking up a card from the deck or from the present discard pile. The end of each turn is marked by a discard. Points will be awarded when a hand finishes as a player calls Gin or knocks. The end of the game is marked by a player reaching 100 points. When this happens the player is going to receive 100 extra points and all the players that won a hand will get 25 points for every hand won. The ending points need to be totaled and we thus have a winner.
We need to add a few more things about the turn and knocking. The card that you draw should be integrated in melds that are built. The discard needs to be a card that your opponent will probably not be able to use to create a meld and, obviously, a card that you do not need in a meld.
Every player in gin rummy is allowed to knock by simply laying down the hand but only when its point value is less than 10 points. After knocking you will add the total of deadwood and the opponent needs to lay down the hand too. Now the deadwood has to be removed from the opponent’s hand and any card from it that can complete a meld for you can be taken. The difference between your deadwood and the deadwood of the opponent will be added to your personal score.
When learning how to play gin rummy you will also want to remember the fact that you are allowed to call GIN and lay the hand down whenever you hold no deadwood. This will also give you an extra 25 points bonus. Also, if you knock and there is less deadwood than what is present in your opponent’s hand the difference will be added to his/her scorecard. When this happens we say that undercutting happened.
You can play gin rummy with friends or online in special rummy rooms that offer this game. It is highly entertaining and involves both strategy and a bit of luck. The games can be played for free or for money and we warmly recommend that you first learn how to be a good free gin rummy player before focusing on money play.
